The night before the test
In Sevenoaks Driving Test Secrets, Geoff Newman describes the night before a test as a time to protect the standard of driving already built, not to learn anything new.[1]
The bucket analogy
Newman compares a candidate's potential on test day to a bucket. Stress makes holes in it, and potential leaks away. By the night before, little can be added; what can be done is to plug the leaks.[1]
Switch off
The most important thing is to switch off from driving entirely: a favourite programme, a film, music, friends, anything unrelated. Cramming theory or replaying lessons only stimulates the mind.[1][2]
Sleep
A good night's sleep helps, but a bad one is not a disaster. Newman has had learners arrive saying they barely slept, who then drove well and passed.[1]
Keep everything normal
The day before or of the test is not the time to start or change medication, adjust doses, or try supplements or stimulants. Newman is not a medical professional and advises following a doctor's guidance. Caffeine for someone who doesn't normally drink it can make them jittery and anxious. He mentions a banana beforehand as an optional light snack; even if any calming effect is placebo, it is unlikely to upset the stomach.[1]
Get organised
The provisional licence, glasses or contact lenses, and the car should all be ready the night before. A licence showing an old address is unlikely to stop the test, but drivers are legally required to tell DVLA when they move, and it is free to do.[1] See Using your own car for the test.
What to wear
There is no dress code. Newman suggests something comfortable and respectable, with no offensive slogans, and layers, since nerves often make people overheat. Sunglasses are fine if the examiner can still see the eyes, and often essential in winter glare.[1]
Footwear matters most. Candidates should wear the shoes they normally drive in; a different pair can make the pedals feel completely different. Very thick soles, high heels and loose shoes are best avoided.[1]
