2026 driving test booking rules
From Sevenoaks Driving Test Wiki, the free local encyclopedia
In 2026 the DVSA changed how car practical tests are booked, aiming to stop tests being bought up and resold.[1][2]
Timeline
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| 31 March 2026 | Car bookings limited to two changes (date, time, centre or swap). Changing date and centre together counts as one. |
| 12 May 2026 | Learners must book and manage their own test. Instructors can no longer do it for them, and selling tests or running services that scan the booking system became unlawful. |
| 9 June 2026 | A booked test can only move to one of the three centres nearest the original, or back to the original. |
How booking works
- New tests are released at 6am every Monday, about 24 weeks ahead. This only helps learners wanting a test about six months away.[1]
- Earlier dates come only from cancellations, which appear at any time. Sevenoaks has no waiting list, and DVSA cannot notify candidates.[1]
- Searching too often can trigger a search limit or "Error 15" block. Use one device and check a few times a day.[1]
- After choosing a slot, there are 15 minutes to complete booking.[1]
- Entering the instructor's reference number shows only dates they are free.[1]
- A full refund needs 10 full working days' notice.[1]
Because Sevenoaks is within easy reach of London, local learners compete with candidates travelling long distances for any available test.[1]
